Slam Latch, for T Handle or L Handle with a 5/16" Shaft
Works in conjunction with either the "L" handle or "T" handle with a 5/16" square shaft. This part mounts to the inside of the door. The shaft connected to the handle goes through the door, fits in the hole and opens or closes the slam latch when turned from the outside. Door thickness doesn't matter---after inserting the shaft into slam latch, just saw off any remaining length of shaft (3 1/2" shaft). polished steel. Specify left hand or right hand slam latch.
RIGHT HAND SLAM LATCH: (IF YOU ARE STANDING OUTSIDE THE TRAILER WITH THE DOOR CLOSED, THE DOOR HINGE IS ON YOUR RIGHT, AND THE DOOR HANDLE IS ON THE LEFT. THE RIGHT HAND SLAM LATCH IS INSTALLED BY TURNING IT OVER AND INSTALLING THE FLAT BACK TO INSIDE OF THE THE DOOR, WITH THE CURVED PART OF THE BOLT FACING THE INSIDE OF THE TRAILER AND THE HOLE FOR THE SHAFT AT THE BOTTOM.)
The left hand slam latch is installed in the opposite way: Door hinge will be on the left, handle on the right. Just remember the hole for the shaft should always be on the bottom, and the curved part of the bolt is always facing the inside because the flat side of the bolt will catch on the frame to hold the door shut. (Usually the left slam latch will be on the left side of the trailer & the right slam latch will be on the right side of the trailer.)
If there is ANY chance a child or small adult should get shut inside the trailer, an inside release is the ONLY way out from the inside, unless the door is also locked. The bolt is simply too hard to move with bare hands.
*Usually fastened with rivets, welds or #10 or #12 sheet metal screws
